TLINGIT Mini Model Wood Totem, Yellow Cedar Wood c.1960
    21.5" Long x 1.5" Wide
    Some Age Patina
This Tlingit Mini Model Totem depicts four separate themes.  At the top is the eagle, Lord of the Sky, wearing a Tlingit-style hat.  Its wings are at rest and encompass a human(?) effigy.  Below the eagle is a bear effigy. According to Tlingit beliefs a bear was a distant relative to the human and bears were not hunted with frequency. Next is a beaver effigy which to The Tribe was a vengeful creature and if provoked, could dig underground.  Lastly, the totem depicts a raven.  The eagle and raven are often depicted together on the same totem to signify clan friendship between the Eagle Clan and Raven Clan.  This Totem is unusual in that it does not have a base; thus, it does not stand upright.
The Tlingit Tribes settled along the Northern Coast of B.C. and South East Coast of Alaska thousands of years ago.  It is speculated that the origins of the tribe date back 11,000 years.  The Tlingits first fought the incursion of Alexy Chiritov in 1741, then Americans after the purchase of Alaska from Russia.  By the 1800s half of the Tlingit population was eradicated by diseases such as small pox.
