Description
Fidelity Chess Challenger CC3: Tested, Works Fine. Board w/Replacement Pieces. Condition is "Pre-Owned".This item is "Board Only" although it seems the board/computer is the only important part. Nice to have the box and original pieces of course, although the pieces have no electronics - The computer allows you to input your moves, and makes a move in reply, all by the red letter/number display and buttons. You could play with any pieces. I supplied a plastic set that is the right size.
I'm not an expert, but I'm reading that Fidelity made a few generations of the Chess Challenger. The first, CC1 has under 1000 examples out there. CC7 was the first mass produced. This one is CC3, given it has 3 levels, and has only 3 rows of buttons, where CC7 has 4. Very collectible.
I tested the computer for two games, about 15-20 moves and it worked fine (Computers are good at chess, I stopped when I lost patience and knew I couldn't win). I am reading that these games can be unreliable overall, I mean we're talking about a early computer that has a wood cabinet and a cord coming directly out of it (with an on/off switch like a lamp). How quaint. So I'm selling the item "As Is". It's as much a collectible, early computer as anything else.
I had a similar model years ago, and it would usually play to a certain point, then sort of flip out. That did not happen with my testing of this item - but I would not be surprised if it happened occasionally.
I included a copy of the manual (pictured), printed off the Web.
