  • Condition: Very Good Condition. This fetish is carved from a coarse opaque quartz type of rock. It is smooth and some areas worn from use as a hunting fetish. There is still some fur/hide underneath near the front of the fetish. It has a wonderful aged patina from years of use. This item was made prior to 1900, and has, in my opinion, gotten better with age. Please see the large photos which depict the condition and are incorporated into the description of this item.

    Description

    OLD JEMEZ PUEBLO PRE 1900 WHITE STONE MOUNTAIN LION HUNTING FETISH AND HIDE POUCH
    Up for auction is a beautiful well aged old stone fetish carving of a mountain lion. This fetish was carved from a white stone which is opaque and appears to be a form of coarse quartz.  The stone has natural lines running through it.  There are darker tan and brown areas on the fetish which are a combination of rock coloration and from handling over the years of use.
    This fetish is from Jemez Pueblo and is a pre 1900 hunting fetish.  It is extremely well carved.  The mountain lion is waiting to pounce on its prey.  It has distinctly carved feet and legs and you can see the front haunches on the mountain lion as it waits to spring into action.  The eyes are of turquoise.  There is a groove in the bottom of the fetish formed when the feet and legs were carved.  The groove has some fur/hide near the front feet of the carving.  The fetish came with this "hunting material", and we have not disturbed it.
    My wife purchased this fetish from the owner of Cowboys and Indians, in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2008.  A copy of the receipt will come with the fetish.
    I photographed this carving under several lighting conditions.    The fetish is in very good condition for its age and use.   It is smooth and some areas worn from use as a hunting fetish.  It has a wonderful aged patina from years of use.  This item was made prior to 1900, and has, in my opinion, gotten better with age.  The mountain lion comes with an old hide pouch, the age of which I am not certain, but the pouch is in good well used condition with some wear and darker areas.  Please see the large photos which depict the condition and are incorporated into the description of this fetish.
    The fetish is 3 and 1/4 inches long by 1 and 1/4 inches high by 1 and 1/16 inches wide.  The pouch is 5 and 1/2 inches long by 2 and 1/2 inches wide.
